Russo Brothers Raise Hopes For New Avengers Movie Games, Noting They're "Definitely Open To It"

Co-directors of several Avengersmovies, Joe and Anthony Russo, state that they would be willing to create Avengers tie-in video games, though it may be a while before fans would get to see them. The most recent Russo Brothers film, The Electric State, is releasing on Netflix on March 14, alongside a tie-in Netflix exclusive mobile video game, The Electric State: Kid Cosmo.

In a recent interview with Variety (spotted by Video Games Chronicle), the Russo Brothers note that they would be open to doing similar tie-in video games for future Avengers films. According to Joe Russo, “we would definitely be open to it,” though at the moment their film-making company, AGBO, is focusing on telling "new stories with new characters and new worlds that people haven’t seen before."

How Likely Are Avengers Movie Games?

We're Unlikely To See Any Avengers Games In The Near Future

The Russo Brothers directed some of the most popular Marvel movies in recent history, including two Captain America films and the duology of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Their most recent film, The Electric State, is not part of the MCU, focusing instead on an alternate reality 90s after a robot uprising.

The Netflix-exclusive video game is a continuation of the trend of movies and shows getting tie-in games. While an Avengers game isn't out of the question according to the Russo brothers, they also make it very clear that it's just not what they're working on at the moment. If there is a game in the cards for fans, it might be a while before it sees the light of day.

The Last Avengers Game Was A Major Miss

But That Doesn't Have To Mean Future Ones Fail, Too

Releasing games along with movies is not a new move in the industry, but old film-tie-in games were never exactly "peak gaming." In more recent years, games created to accompany movies have gotten much better, no longer acting as a quick cash grab but rather as an additional way to engage with the fanbase.

That doesn't mean each movie video game has been a success, like the ill-fated Marvel's Avengers. The game was launched in 2020 and was shut down a mere three years later, serving as a reminder that simply including beloved characters isn't enough for dedicated gamers and fans alike.

It seems that the Russo brothers are honing their skills with the Electric State game, which looks like a delightfully nostalgic trip back to the 90s (except grittier and with more robot overlords). But the stakes here are certainly lower than with a more established name. Any tie-in Avengers movie game would have a lot to live up to, and create an experience that's both faithful to the movie but also a video game that stands on its own. Hopefully by the time they decide to give it a try, they'll have a hit on their hands.
