"Oh Christ, No.": Original American Horror Story Actor Offers Thoroughly Candid Response To Potential Return 6 Years After Franchise Exit
American Horror Story star Jessica Lange has candidly reflected on her potential return to the long-running horror anthology series. She was one of the main cast members for the first four seasons of American Horror Story, playing nosy neighbor Constance Langdon in Murder House, cruel nun Sister Jude Martin in Asylum, Supreme witch Fiona Goode in Coven, and carnival owner Elsa Mars in Freak Show. However, her only appearances since the season 4 finale were cameos in two episodes of season 8, Apocalypse, in 2018, in which she reprised her original role as Constance.
SPIN 1038 caught up with Jessica Lange on the red carpet for the premiere of her new movie Long Day's Journey Into Night. When asked if she might return for American Horror Story season 13, which is in the works, she bluntly responded, "Oh Christ, no." She explained that it has been a long time since she has been part of the series, and when pressed about potentially returning for what is supposed to be the final season, she simply responded "no." Read her full quote and see the original video below:
Oh Christ, no. I mean, I haven't done it for more than 10 years, 12 years, so, no, I'm not doing it. No [I won't come back for a final season].
What This Means For Jessica Lange
She Has Left American Horror Story Behind
These comments seemingly reveal that Lange has long ago left the series in the rearview. Even though the first four seasons helped reinvigorate her career after taking on fewer major film roles in the 2000s, she has enjoyed a number of other film roles since 2011, starring in projects including The Vow, The Gambler, and Marlowe. Now that she has entered a new phase of her career, it might seem strange to return for American Horror Story season 13, especially since many of the recurring cast members from her seasons have similarly exited the series since then.
Long-running American Horror Story cast members who have not appeared in the past two seasons or more include Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, and Kathy Bates.
However, this does not seem to indicate any ill will between Lange and the creators of the show, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. Since her final American Horror Story episodes, she played Truman Capote's mother Lillie Mae Faulk on three episodes of Murphy's series Feud season 2 (after starring as Joan Crawford in season 1, which detailed the feud between the iconic star and Bette Davis), and reunited both Murphy and Falchuk on their Netflix series The Politician, in which she played the grandmother of Zoey Deutch's character Infinity Jackson.
Our Take On Jessica Lange's American Horror Story Comments
She Is Likely Making The Right Decision
While Jessica Lange not appearing in what could be the final season of American Horror Story feels like a missed opportunity, it is likely the right decision for her not to return to the series. After playing four indelible characters in a row, whatever character she is given in the new storyline might feel like a letdown in comparison. This could especially be the case given the added anticipation that would come from audiences waiting more than a decade for a new Lange character after the 2015 finale of Freak Show.
